Elijah's Allies

Becky and Matt Bruer have been licensed therapeutic foster parents for the Black Hills Children's Home Society since 2000. At the time they had fostered 9 children in their home, 5 of the children are siblings.

In January 2006 they were contacted about the dire situation Elijah was in, and they took him under their care without hesitation. Elijah was born 20 September 2005 with Renal Disease (kidney failure). Elijah's biological parents were unable give him the care he required. So he was removed from their home. His prognosis was not very good at the time, as an infant with kidney failure he needed to be at least 18 pounds before he would be considered for the transplant list. He was not expected to live more than 3-4 months in his present situation.

In February , 2006 he was placed in the Bruer's home, and put on peritoneal dialysis. In order to properly care for Elijah, Becky has had to travel to one of the only Specialty Hospitals in the nation for infants with this disorder, the University of Minnesota's, Fairview Children's Hospital. Her initial 5 week trip to Minneapolis with Elijah gave her the proper training required to perform the daily peritoneal dialysis he needed to survive. Since then Becky traveled to Minnesota with Elijah monthly for check-ups. Matt incorporated a feeding pump into a little backpack, and with the feeding tube in his nose 24 hours a day, gradually Elijah began gaining weight and his general health started to improve, on August 1st, 2006 he hit the magic number of 18 pounds and was added to the transplant waiting list.

This is the best part of the story, Matt & Becky own a Campground is Sturgis, SD called No Name City RV & Cabins, Home of World Famous Sturgis Rally, the Rally was just starting to wind up. When on August 3rd at 7pm, they received a phone call with an offer of a kidney, but Elijah had to be in Minnesota for the transplant by 4 am (9 hours later). The last commercial flight out of Rapid City had already departed, and driving takes about 10-12 hours at best so they were faced with the possibility of having to pass on the kidney.

That's when one of our campers overheard us, saying we had to give up the kidney, He told me not to give up on the kidney yet and left. He came back in a couple of minutes, and said that he had a private plane waiting for Elijah and Becky at the airport. He said not to worry about the expense he had it all taken care of. Apparently he passed the hat around to the campground and raised enough money to pay for his flight. Now with Becky being gone to Minnesota with Elijah, Matt was the only one left to run the campground and take care of 5 other kids. So again our campers came through, they started pitching in and helping with everything from checking people in, and showing first timers where to go, to helping with the kids. With everything that was going on at the campground, it turned out to be the smoothest Rallies we have ever had in the 12 years since we opened the campground. Anyway on August 4th at 5am Elijah had a successful transplant and is doing well. Thanks to a bunch of (bad-ass) bikers with Hearts of Gold, who helped save a little boy's life.

Without the help and support of our awesome campers, I think things would be very different for Elijah and for us. We thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts, you guys are amazing... THANKS AGAIN!

Update: After 10 years of fostering the 5 siblings the Standing Rock Tribe, finally allowed us to adopt the 5 siblings. On July 6th, 2011 the adoption became final.
